Subject-matter jurisdiction

The determination of which ‘type’ of court is competent to hear a case.

The law regulates which cases come before which judges. For example, all appeals are heard by the courts of appeal. All cases at first instance are in principle submitted to the court unless the subdistrict court has jurisdiction, e.g., in labour and tenancy disputes. Absolute jurisdiction is also called absolute competence.
